Senate President Don Perata, a former classroom teacher, established the Oakland Parents Literacy Project to turn things around by improving reading in Oakland’s public schools.

The Oakland Parents Literacy Project hosts more than 50 events each year, reaching nearly 10,000 students and parents. The program gave away 8,000 free books last year alone.

Family Reading Nights

Held at elementary schools throughout Oakland, the Oakland Parents Literacy Project invites parents

and their children to school for a free dinner and an adventure in reading.

Professional storytellers and guest readers share the joy of reading, parents and teachers form new bonds, and every child receives a gift book to take home.
